La Ford Mustang démarra sa carrière le 17 avril 1964 mais cela ne l'empêcha pas de faire une entrée fracassante : 22 000 unités furent écoulées le premier jour de sa sortie. À noter qu'à cette époque Ford innova en ce sens que le modèle 65 démarra officiellement le 17 avril 1964, c'était une première et toutes ces Mustang furent estampillées modèle 65. Ce sont les collectionneurs qui nommèrent la Mustang 64 1/2 réalisant les caractéristiques différentes des voitures d'avril au 13 juillet 64. Elle écrasa littéralement les scores de la Plymouth Barracuda que la firme du groupe Chrysler se targuait d'avoir sorti deux semaines plus tôt. Un vrai mythe était né.
