An employee at Mallalieus' mill weighs out raw woollen fibres to be dyed, in Delph, near Oldham, northern England on January 17, 2024. Founded in 1863, Mallalieus operate one of the last remaining vertical woollen mill in England, with dyeing, blending, carding, spinning, weaving and finishing processes all taking place in the village. The mill produces fabrics for both the clothing and furnishing industries. The company was founded by brothers David and Henry Mallalieu who were descended from French Protestant Huguenots. Renowned for their expertise in weaving, their ancestors had fled to England in 1572 to escape religious persecution. Since medieval times the area around Delph has been a centre for woollen weaving, owing to the local availability of sheep wool and soft water.
