Laphroaig (prononcé 'la-froyg') est le nom d'une distillerie située dans l'île d’Islay sur la côte ouest de l’Écosse. Son nom vient du gaélique écossais Lag a'mhor aig qui signifie « la grotte de la baie ». La distillerie (fondée en 1815) est la propriété de l'entreprise Beam Suntory Global Spirits depuis juillet 2005, emploie vingt personnes et produit 2 200 000 litres d'alcool pur par an. En raison de son caractère phénolique, Laphroaig jouit d’une grande réputation auprès des amateurs. Rien d’étonnant alors à ce que la distillerie soit propriétaire de sa propre tourbière capable de l’approvisionner pour les 4 000 prochaines années. Laphroaig ne perdra jamais son caractère et par conséquent ses adorateurs et ses détracteurs, car un malt aussi tourbé ne peut faire l’unanimité : même l’eau puisée à la source du Loch Kilbride est filtrée par la tourbe!
